Finding and Applying For Government Grants
With over $400 billion in grants available from 1000 different programs
from the U.S. Government, it may be challenging to find a program that you
or your company may qualify for while applying for grants.
With a little bit of effort and some well thought out strategies, this
article will show you the resources you will need to both research and apply
for a grant program.
The easiest method to applying for grants is to log on to www.grants.gov.
This is by far the largest source for government grants. With this site,
you'll have four different options when it comes to searching for
information. The first option is to use a basic search. The basic search
goes by keywords, so typing in word specific grants will take you where you
want to go. For example, typing in a Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
number (CFDA) will take you to the number specific grant you seek. Once
you've found the grant you are looking for it's best to write these numbers
down as it's a quick and easy way to return to the grant should you happen
to need the site again.

The next search option is by category. With over 21 different categories
including the arts, employment, environment, health, and others, this may
eliminate search time. The third search option is very similar, the agency
search. There will be over 40 agencies to choose from that offer grants you
can apply for.
Lastly, this site offers and advanced search. With this search, you are able
to use keywords a long with specific keywords that include date posted,
agency, category, eligibility and others. You can also sign up via email, to
receive emails when specific grants in a particular opportunity category are
posted.
After all of your information is gathered, you must download a grant
application and apply for the grant. Make sure you have your funding
opportunity and/or the CFDA number handy as you need those to apply. Review
your application before submitting as all of your information needs to be
submitted.
You also have to register with grants.gov and create your very own account.
This is needed to receive approval from your organization to submit
applications. You will also be able to track application status.
Once you are finished with your application, log into your grants.gov
account and send it away. Check frequently with your account and track your
application status with your CFDA number, Funding opportunity number,
Competition ID, and/or Grants.gov tracking number.
