How To Find Grants

Every year, the federal government issues approximately over 150 billion dollars in government-funded grant programs to businesses and individuals. These grants are provided to assist businesses in growing and providing jobs and to also help individuals financially with education and/or other personal needs. Despite the great abundance of grant programs available, many businesses and individuals are having trouble with how to find grants.

The system can be very confusing for the average person, but luckily, there is progress being made to help find grants. The federal government has a website, Grants.gov, that people can visit and find money by agency, category or browse through what's available. Even though the website is a step in the right direction, it's still hard to use especially since the search function isn't user friendly. Another problem with Grants.gov is it doesn't contain a complete list of all grant programs that are available. Individuals will likely need to employ additional research methods to discover all the government grant opportunities out there.

When trying to find government grants, the best resource someone can use are Internet search engines. By typing in “grants for single mothers”, search engines will search for the exact phrase. This may not seem like it makes much of a difference but it will often narrow down the results to a more manageable size for research.

Other websites that can help one find grants are cfda.gov and firstgov.gov. The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) can help an individual find related government grant programs while firstgov.gov has an entire section dedicated to grants and other benefits. If either website isn't entirely helpful, there are numerous commercial products available that maintain private databases of grant opportunities. Even though they sometimes cost a small fee, they are worth it as it saves time trying to find grants.

Once an individual finds the information the grant they hope to apply for, the first thing they should is contact the funding organization and verify the details of the grant. Most of the time, the provided information is out of date so it would be best to make sure the data is recent and up-to-date before an application is submitted. Applicants can also make a phone call or send a letter to the group that funds the grant to confirm information as well.

There are several government grant programs available for people with various needs. All you need to do is conduct a thorough search. It can be hard to find grants but the time and effort put into the search is definitely worth it.
